Frequently asked questions

Who was Celia Cruz?
Celia Cruz (Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso, October 21, 1925 - July 16, 2003) was a Cuban-born American singer, considered the Queen of Salsa. She was born in Havana and fled Cuba in 1960 after the revolution. She won 5 Grammys and 4 Latin Grammys. In 2024, she became the first Afro-Latina woman to appear on a US quarter. Her cry ¡Azúcar! is a global Latino cultural icon.
Why did she say, "¡Azúcar!" as her catchphrase?
The cry "¡Azúcar!" was born when a waitress in Miami asked Celia if she wanted sugar in her Cuban coffee. Celia replied, "Boy, but this Cuban coffee without sugar?" That night on stage, she shouted it as an expression of Cuban identity and flavor. It became her personal trademark, symbolizing sweetness, life, and Latin identity.
What are Celia's most iconic songs?
Her greatest hits: La Vida es un Carnaval (1998), Quimbara (1974, with Johnny Pacheco), Bemba Colorá (1966), Yo Viviré (Latin version of I Will Survive, 2000), Ríe y Llora (1998), Cao Cao Maní Picao (1948), Burundanga, La Negra Tiene Tumbao (2002, her last major hit). Total: more than 80 albums in 5 decades.
Are the T-shirts official merchandise?
No. They are original fan art created by LOSMIOS, inspired by Celia Cruz's visual aesthetic: her colorful wigs, stage costumes, and her catchphrase ¡Azúcar! They are not affiliated with the Knight family (husband Pedro), Sony Music, or the Celia Cruz Foundation. They are unique creations that celebrate her legacy.
What designs does the collection include?
21 designs including: 1) The phrase "¡Azúcar!" in a salsa font, 2) Portrait of Celia with a blonde wig, 3) "La Vida es un Carnaval" with confetti, 4) Stylized Cuban flag with her silhouette, and 5) Song lyrics such as "Yo viviré" or "La negra tiene tumbao." Also pieces with her 25-cent coin.
